*Ebike Range: Explained

An ebike's battery life is influenced by several factors that can affect its maximum range. While our ebikes can achieve up to 60 miles of range under ideal riding conditions, range can vary from 20 - 60 miles based on many contributing factors.

Here's a list of the most common factors that affect range, as well as what you can do to maximize your riding time.

  • Pedal Assist: Higher levels of pedal assist will allow for an easier ride, but will also draw more power from the battery. Lower pedal assist levels are better for getting as many miles as possible out of your battery.

  • Average Cruising Speed: Riding slower will decrease the amount of energy you lose to wind resistance as the bike pushes you forward. Slower speeds will extend battery life.

  • Tire Pressure: Keeping your tires inflated to the recommended pressure can help increase your range. Maintaining a proper tire pressure not only increases your range, but also helps prevent pinch flats! For most riding situations, checking your tire pressure at least once a week will keep your ride safe and energy-efficient.

  • Load Weight: Carrying a heavier load can decrease your range. This includes the total load of both the weight of the rider and any cargo you may be carrying. More weight takes more time and energy to get up to speed, negatively affecting your range. It's best to keep loads light whenever possible if you're looking to extend your range.

  • Terrain & Elevation: In general, riding over smooth and flat terrain will give you a longer range. Hills and rough terrain can greatly impact your maximum range, especially on higher assist levels.

  • Wind: That's right! The wind can affect your battery range too! Riding into a headwind will decrease your range, but if you're able to catch a tailwind, you'll actually see that you'll gain more range! Be mindful of which way the wind is blowing when you are riding. If you've been riding in a tailwind, turning around will take more energy from the battery to get you home.

  • Ambient Temperature: Riding in cold weather will impact the battery's ability to function optimally. A good rule of thumb is, if you're comfortable, then the battery is comfortable too. This also goes for storing the battery too!

This bike continues with the California theme (following AIMA's previous Big Sur model), but it has something extremely unique: a Route 66 Bafang motor designed exclusively for the Santa Monica.

I really like this bike for the most part

I'm 5'10" 270 lbs. Choose this one due to the higher weight limit and the bigger motor and I have no issues at all with the size or power. The motor is considerably more quite than most. I like the throttle set up, makes getting going from a stop easy. The step through design is nice but definitely adds to some wobble at higher speeds. I took it in to have the wabble checked out and was told it's normal. I'm getting about 40 miles per charge. However, when the battery gets to 20-25% I'm only getting about 1/2 the power. I don't like that I cannot fully turn off my light during the day. Seems like a waste of my battery life. I got the front basket but it did not come with any wire extension to relocate my light. That required the local bike shop to do some custom install. Seems silly you would not send an extension so the light could be mounted how you show it should be. Mine is mounted underneath my basket since no extensions was available. Last it would be nice if the handle grips were ergonomic. Overall a few minor tweaks and this would be 5 stars. Currently 3.5 stars.

Great Cruising Bike

I'm a senior and this bike matched my purchase criteria of: low step over height, powerful motor, strong brakes, proven components, and a sub $2k purchase price (summer 2024). The Santa Monica has exceeded every performance criteria; it effortlessly climbs the steepest hills I ride on (mostly in PAL2), stops on a dime, and handles fast turns with stability and balance. I ride at around 20 MPH and get a good workout every time I go out (mostly riding in PAL1). The fit and finish are Mercedes quality; the welds are seamless and the paint is flawless. Great attention to detail and it gave me confidence that the rest of the bike is similarly well executed. The silent Bafang motor (very healthy at 750/1200 W and makes this bike a rocket in PAL5) and coordinated electronics have performed perfectly. I go over 50 miles on a charge, mostly riding in PAL1. The only negative is its 64 lb. weight; it is a heavy bike but that weight seems competitive with other cruiser eBikes. Once rolling, I don't notice the weight. The bike has been trouble free for the year I have been riding it. If you are looking for a cruiser eBike, it would be a mistake to not take a Santa Monica for a test ride.

Almost Perfect

The bike satisfies almost all my needs with the exception of two things: I wish it would travel further on a full charge and I wish it was more water proof.

Bike is great, spare parts are a concern

Pros:
I like everything about the bike itself.

Cons:
Concerned about spare parts. A thief stole my bike. I got it back, but he broke the display mount. My dealer ordered another, but three months later, still no part. (This was well before any tariffs)

The headlight perimeter LEDs are on all the time. A daytime running light. I want the ability to turn DRL off.

Best ever

So... I had a Mongoose full suspension mountain bike for YEARS. I loved that bike. Early 2022 we got an RV. We took our bikes on the back of the RV that whole year and rode them on many different campgrounds. It was fine...until, 1) we attempted to ride them in the hills of PA and were completely spent afterwards, and 2) ended up visiting a campground in OH who had complimentary ebikes. We fell in love instantly. We started with cheaper Amazon bikes. They were fine, but mine conked out in the middle of a wine tour of all things in western MD. From there i started my search...again. ultimately I found a bright red fat tire bike and went to go see it. Well the gentleman also had a black Santa Monica. I loved it's looks. Then... I rode it. I was sold! Loved everything about it. The power, the stitched leather look of the handlebars, the seat, the brake lights, turn signals and bright headlight. It even has a daytime running light, which i think is the coolest little Easter egg ever. Great bike, solid and good looking. Now... if I can only get Aima to finally come out with some accessories...
